Lesson 8: Installing Deadbolts - Part 1

Suggested practices

Before we learn how to install a deadbolt, we will take some time to learn more about deadbolts. The locksmith industry has recognized that every external doorway needs to have a deadbolt to be secure. Deadbolts are the strongest source of door security that can be installed on a door. They come in a range of styles and manufacturers, but all deadbolts contain a key operated cylinder within a metal shrouding and a retractable bolt or latch that engages with the frame. Most deadbolts have a thumb turn which engages the bolt from inside the house, and a keyway on the outside. As a member of the security industry, you should insist that every external door be outfitted with a deadbolt.
