Lesson 11: Door Hardware - Part 3

Smart key locks

The Weiser smart key lock is starting to be seen more frequently on residential doors. The smart key system allows the lock to be rekeyed without taking the cylinder apart. This means that the lock can be rekeyed without the assistance of an expert. Smart key locks come in deadbolts, handle sets and more. You can identify a smart key lock by the small hole on the front of the cylinder. These locks use a series of wafers inside the cylinder to create a sheer line. The depths are set by a wafer bar. By depressing a button inside the hole on the cylinder you may set the wafers to a new key. The wafer pins make this lock difficult to pick, however, it is vulnerable to a specific type of forced entry. Installing a smart key lock is the exact same as installing any other lock of its kind. For example, to install a smart key deadbolt, follow the installation guide for installing deadbolts.

How to open a smart key lock

Smart key locks are pick resistant and drill resistant. When you encounter an emergency situation involving smart key locks you will have to destroy the lock to open the door. The quickest and cleanest way to open a smart key lock in an emergency situation is to force the cylinder open. The smart key opening tool has one end that can be inserted into the keyway while the other end acts as a handle. Insert the tool and forcibly turn the handle until the cylinder rotates. This destroys the lock but will open the door. Remember to never leave your customer less secure then when you got there. If you need to force entry, be prepared to replace the lock afterwards.
